Not-So-Black Liquid (Not-So-Black IPA)

Unread postby niels » Thu Jun 26, 2014 9:10 pm

A recipe based on a recipe I got from my nephew. He brewed a Black IPA (called Liquid Black) which I did like very much. He did use Sinamar to darken the colour, but I'm not doing that. It feels a bit like cheating.

Also, to compensate the fact that my Simcoe hops has less % AA (11.7% vs 14%) I'm replacing the bittering addition with Northern Brewing 9% AA as I already opened it.

Code: Select all
Not-So-Black Liquid

Volume:   23 l
Efficiency: 75%
Boiling: 90 min
OG: 1073
IBU: 53

Malt                 HWE   Weight   %Weight   Extract   %Extract
Maris Otter 5 EBC    305    4850    64.03%      48       65.96%
Munchener 17 EBC     290    1600    21.12%      15       20.65%
Crystal 130 EBC      275     750     9.90%       7        9.20%
Carafa III 1400 EBC  251     375     4.95%       3        4.20%

Hop               %AA    Weight  Time    IBU    Utilization
Northern Brewer   9.00%   50      90    35.29      0.200
Simcoe           11.70%   30      15    14.19      0.093
Simcoe           11.70%   30       0     0.00      0.000
Simcoe           11.70%   40       0     0.00      0.000

Yeast: Fermentis Safbrew S-33

Recipe is calculated by hand, but the IBU result is way off from the BeerSmith result (although they are both calculated using Tinseth): 53 vs 65.
I still need to calculate the color.

Looks very nice - love the Simcoe hops.

Fully agree with you on Sinamar. It is more of a color adjuster, as it can be added directly into the keg 'cause it doesn't need to be boiled.

Would S-33 yeast add a bit of a Belgian twist to the IPA?

Looks like the half-pipe on a 50L can pack in a lot more grain than the full-pipe on a 20L.

Are you able to fit the entire 7.5 kg grain bill into the pipe or would you be steeping the Crystal / Carafa separately?

The original recipe I received called for S-33. I just presumed that the beer could use some residual sweetness to balance the hops and the bitter and/or provide some body to the beer. I liked the sample I tasted so why making dramatic changes? ;)

Speidel states that the maximum capacity for the 20L pipe is 6 kg, since the 25L pipe is about 25% bigger (I presume) I think it should fit the 7.5 kg of grain without a problem. Especially as the official numbers are a bit on the conservative side.

I'll start brewing in an hour or so and I'll report back!

It's kinda comforting to know of someone who is brewing and no doubt having a great day (without disasters) whilst I'm stuck in an office on a Friday afternoon looking at the sunshine wishing the hours away.....

Let us know how it goes Neils :D
To brew or not to brew, that would be a stupid question !

It was a bit of a struggle with the amount of malt and the no-sparge method, but the end result looks/smells/tastes promising: viewtopic.php?f=10&t=340

Well, we learned from our mistakes :)
