Boil rate for a 20L BM

Hi All

I use a 20L BM and also Beersmith software.

Now i'm having a terrible time hitting my OG's, im actually a mile off and i dont get why.
I upgraded to Beersmith-3 and its basically since then so I feel my software equipment settings are wrong.

Question 1:
Does anyone use beer smith or a better software with their Braumeister?

Question 2:
What is the boil off / evaporation rate of a BM 20L? i asked speidel and they didn't know i need this for my software?

Question 3:
Has anyone any tips when creating a recipe to hit your OG? im crushing my malts at 1.55mm

I'm starting to get a bit down as its a few brews in a row now i've thrown away....

Even if you don’t hit your OG why throw away good beer. Just boil a bit longer to get closer. Are you sparging?

Regarding first question, I just started to test https://web.brewfather.app instead of Brewers Friend as I used to use. I'm quite impressed so far, and it also have built in example "equipment profiles" for different Braumeister versions.

Yes im I'm sparing as per the amount beersmith states, and this indeed could be one of the issues.

I find all he amounts beersmith 3 state to be over the top.
I did try to boil this batch further, but it was simply a light year away from hitting the OG, should of been 1045 as was only 1029 and would just become too bitter.

I've now room to ferment such beer in my kegerator

I don’t generally sparge with bm. I have a 10ltr. I think you can easily get bogged down with software.
I get approx 75-80% efficiency with mine but fill to 12 litres.
After removing the grain bill if too low will spage back to 12 before the boil. I usually lose 1.5 to 2 litres on the boil and end up with approx 10. Grain crush has quite an important effect on the og. But I just manage the grain bill quants to get where I want to end up.
I use brewers Friendster the efficiency low. Say 65-70% and go from there. You can easily dilute the wort if high but a pain in the asse if the other way.

I thought the whole point of a BM is you dont have to sparge :beerbang:

The roller gap of your mill looks a bit wide.
Try 1.2 mm

Why would you want to leave all those extra sugars in the grain bill? :drink:

Thanks Rob,

I did change my crush slightly, actually on the advice of Braumeister, as they recommend 1.6mm and i do 1.50mm
Shall play around with that, and spentsome time reviewing my equipment profile etc.

Everyone is right, don't get sucked into the numbers, but i'm an engineer and want to keep improving my beer and its efficiency :cheers:

Try one step at a time. You have soooo many things going on fault finding will be much harder.

Buy some crushed grain.
Don't sparge.
Don't use beersmith
Make a simple recipe.
Use a simple method.
Make yourself grin (and probably drunk too).

PS. I have never thrown away beer. Can I ask why? Was it undrinkable or just not what you intended?

The waste of time for this outdated process,
Or to buy a BM to run a bucket of grain, And by doing so end it?


TBH. Don't worry about it yet. Focus on making yourself grin with some good beer.
