Element becoming exposed

On my BM 50L, I'm finding my outer element is becoming exposed during the mash period resulting in me having to add water!

I'm doing a 30L brew with the 50L malt pipe, so my water calculations are off somewhat.

I'm using beersmith with a 5.9kg grain bill and beersmith stated to add 43.4 lts water, but I've had to add another 3 to 4 lts to keep the element covered. So somewhere in my beersmith settings the water/grain ratio must be wrong!!

If you look on myspeidel.com under public recipes you will find most recipes all use 55 litres to start and whatever sparge water is required.
I use Beersmith 2 but I input the standard amount of water Speidel suggests regardless of recipe, then use the "Est Original Gravity" slider to fine adjust the grain bill after I make up the recipe.

If you are short on a final volume, and if you can drink your tap water. Top it up in the fermenter. I have proved it makes no difference.

If you establish what the minimum fill volume for this configuration, please share.

Sounds as though you need to buy a short malt tube. Much cheaper than a new element !

Agree.

You need the shorter malt pipe for 25l brews. I typically get about 26 to 27l out when brewing a smaller batch using the short malt pipe. About 41l gross volume (90 min boil). Not designed to brew less than 50l net batches with the large (standard) malt pipe.

No prob.. Used it a lot during my Bm50 time..
Another option is to just disconnect the outer element..

Thanks for the tips folks.

I generally like to do 30L batch size in my brews rather than 50L And all my brews are no sparge.

I have a short malt pipe and was aiming to do a 20L batch tomorrow. However I've done a water only test with the small malt pipe. Beersmith called for 28 Lt in the BM so when I did the test using the small pipe I still had the outer element being uncovered!! I'm wondering if the element has been "lifted" somewhat whilst cleaning and is now slightly to high!!

I've not had this problem on earlier brews to the best of my knowledge.

With a water only test the element will be exposed because you are lacking the volume of the grain.
