Hops after boil and transfer to fermentor

Unread post by lynch140 » Mon Dec 02, 2019 9:24 am

Do many people here use hop spiders in their braumeister. After brewing a very hoppy beer I am left with alot of sludge at the bottom and therefore my efficience is effected as I do not get the full volume anticipated into the fermentor

any tips to maximise what goes into the fermentor

I use Mangrove Jack 800 micron. I also press it (hard) after boil to every last little drop out.

Finally I top up the fermenter to where I want. Can't see the point of doing it any other way.

I use a hop reservoir sold by Williams Brewing In San Leandro, CA...don't think I have the ability to link or show pic. It's a conical sieve like ss container that just hangs on the BM. I was a bit skeptical at first as to getting hop efficiency, but imho I get all I want out of my hop additions. I, however, have to remove it after the boil in order to put my ic in. I sanitize the ic in star san 15 mins before eob because I can't use boiling wort to do it. Does that make sense?

The amount of hop particulate I get out of the thing when dumping is like amazing.

Cal :drink: And, sorry, it IS called the hop spider for Grainfather...it fits just above the coils and hangs from the side and does a really good job of keeping the wort cleaner...

Hello,
With the Utah Filte I have enough space to place the Hydra Chiller.

That looks like the one I have. As you say, the chiller fits over it. I've never worked out what the short stainless steel tube is for.

I sure like that one over the hop spider...it's right in the center of the boil instead of being held on the side. Are you saying you can put your ic inside it when you're done or do you have to remove it b/4 chilling with the ic? I think I still get pretty good utilization with the spider though...

Interesting. I had never considered the chiller fitting over the hop spider before.
Does this matter? Am I missing something?

If the hop spider is removed during cooling will that have an affect on the desired bitterness and flavour?

That was sort of my thinking - what difference does it make - stays in for its 'time' then you chill?

It shouldn't. Theoretically, all the acids are already in solution and the chemical reactions continue even if you remove the hop spider. Otherwise, it would be easy for no chill brewers to just use the spider and remove it before transferring to the cube. Doesn't work that way.

even if you add hops at end of boil, how long should they stay in the wort till you could remove the spider, surely they need some time to do their thing?

Hello,
In my opinion, the main advantage of this kind of hopspider is doing a hopstand after the flameout at 85ºc during sometime. I low the temperature with the chiller, maintein it with the Braumeister control, and when stable, I add the aroma hops. After the required time, I remove the hopspider and hold it above the chiller while drains all the worth inside the hops that I press with a long spoon not too loose to much worth.

M
