Identify and replace a blown capacitor

Unread post by rocketman »

Found this PDF that describes the process to identify and to replace a blown capacitor,
I don't think it's for everyone, but I'll leave it here if anyone find it useful.

Anyone know why I can't open the link? Click on it and it shows it's downloading.. and then I get a pop-up that says Adobe reader can't open it. This is on my Apple.. altho I have never seen this pop-up before in hundreds of downloads.

I've just replaced a start/run capacitor on a freezer, simple and cheap fix, google and youtube are your friends for learning how to test a capacitor.
To brew or not to brew, that would be a stupid question !

I can't open the link either, it downloads, but will not open. :? :?
Give a man a beer, waste an hour. Teach a man to brew, and waste a lifetime!

It seems the file was corrupted (probably caused by one of the physical node issues we experienced a few months ago). I reuploaded it and the download should be fine again.

All of these type of caps can go bad after a while, leakage is the enemy here if it does leak it will eat thru the FR4 PCB material and destroy the PCB.

If you can find any electronics company nearer to home this should be a quick fix, but be wary of taking them to a 'mobile phone repairers' as the PCB absorbs moisture over time and excessive heat reworking these can rip the tracks up/delaminate the PCB and then it's new controller time.

From the photos it looks like a multi-layer PCB so extra care needs to be taken to rework them. I'm an Electronics Manufacturing Engineer/PCB Engineer, so I have the kit to replace these at home, should you find yourself in a fix email me and i will try and help. Unless like me you are made of money and just upgraded to the shiney new controller - £275 only able to source these from Braumeister direct. :beerbang:
