Wort not making it over malt pipe

Unread postby desupero » Sat Apr 07, 2018 10:00 am

Hello,

On my last few batches the wort seems to be struggling to make it over the maltpipe. I have checked that both pumps are operating. I have 4.53kg of grains in the 20l pipe, and enough water 28liters to get it there. I stir it occasionally to make sure the water is flowing through the grain. But after 30 mins the water/wort is still not making it over the pipe. Wondering if anyone has any suggestions?

TIA

Al

Open up the pumps and check both impellers are clean. These can get bunged up. Make sure the pump is clean and the holes in the impeller are clean, this will affect the performance of the pump. Also make sure the pipes down to the pump are clean - stick a bamboo skewer or chopstick down the hole and wiggle it about. These can clog too.

Check that the grist is not too fine.

+1 on too fine grind, causing the same effect as stuck sparge but in reverse.

Is the malt pipe red seal..
A. Installed
B. Tightened up enough
C. Intact

This must be right, else the width takes the easiest route.... Sideways

Have you tested with just water to see if the pumps are working?

If you are milling your own grains, back off on the mill gap ...1.4mm to 1.2mm to start with and adjust from there. I'm not a gambling man, but I'd bet my Braumeister that your problem is related to grist size.
