Commercial production on BM500 starts next week. Exciting!

Hi guys!

Glad to find this forum of fellow BM users. I myself has been on a BM20 for some years now and am now taking the step forward and starting my own part time brewery over here where I live in western Finland.

Will keep everyone posted now and then with my experiences of the BM500. Although the idea is the same as with the BM20 I expect the unexpected, at least during the first brews. Anyhow I am sure that even taking that in to account I will be able to produce drinkable beers

I've just been through the thorough beaurocracy that comes with starting a brewery in Finland. It was quite a lot to do and many costs attached to the process but now that part is sorted.

If there are any BM500 users around I would much appreciate any hints and pointers you could give me before the first brew. Although I think I have everything covered you never know.

For example would it be okay to use whole cone hops without a hop bag? When cooling down during the whirlpool would they be sucked in to the pump and mess it up or would the whirlpool effect make sure that the hops are centered in the kettle?

Regarding the cooling, I will be using the cooling jacket with my cooling compressor I bought from Lindr. What are your experiences of the cooling process for these large BM500 vessels?

What kind of beers do you produce? have you already test it?

Thanks!

I have not yet done a real brew on the 500 l so it is nervous and exciting.

In theory it should work by the same principles as the 20, 50 etc but I will see how it goes when I go live and I will keep you posted.

I will produce a range of beers starting with an american pale ale, then a stout followed by a british style bitter.

I currently have 3 x 625 l fermentation tanks from Speidel and I will do the secondary and maturing in keykegs as all my production will be sold on tap at local restaurants.

Welcome and a very nice set-up. Will be interesting to compare your experiences with our 20/50 Ltr "amateurs" :D

Good luck and keep us posted

Out of interest, how do you scale recipes?

I applied the thermo cover today. Not only does it make the BM500 more heat effective, it also guards you from burning yourself on the hot surface.

I use this chiller for my fermenters and during cooling of wort.

Manufacturer Lindr and price about 700 USD plus freight.

Scaling is a challenge and I do not have any straight forward answer to this. My idea is in the beginning to keep things as simple as possible whilst getting used to the BM500.

I will start with brewing an IPA and the base of the recipe is Speidels own, which I have tweaked in different ways. I will be following the same mashsteps as Speidel recommends in this recipe and play around a bit with the hops.

Man that is way cool. I bought the 50l and plan on upscaling as soon a place opens up in my town. Best of luck to you in your ventures

Great stuff. Did you make any mods to your 20L unit that make sense for the 500L? Is the outlet on the bottom, rather than the side? Is the pump mag drive? It looks more conventional than on the 10/20/50L models. The ratio of malt pipe to overall diameter looks different from the smaller models.

How us the spent grain removed from the malt pipe? Is there a catch pan you can hang under it while lautering (sparging?)?
Is there a chute to keep from dripping when moving the malt pipe to the side?

Do you have to rely on that paddle to whirlpool, or is there a pump circuit for that? I could see some potential to having a source of hot water to circulate through the cooling jacket while brewing.

Thanks for sharing the pics of big brother.
