HOT dome

Unread postby airborn » Fri Feb 13, 2015 5:11 pm

My BM sometimes try to boil over when boiling with the dome on
then I lift the done for a second

AND today I burned or scolded my fingers so much that I write this.

Has anyone put one or perhaps two kind of handles on the dome?

If not - I will - but rather use our experiences

Have a read of this topic where some of us have made a dome for the BM and have installed handles.

viewtopic.php?f=4&t=197

I have used a wooden knob where others have been more elaborate and have shaped handles to fit the curve of the dome.
I think someone suggested a pair of welding gloves as well

Which ever way you go you will burn your hands if you lift the dome during the boil without a handle

Most of us who did a DIY dome added handles, like with mine. I'm sure you could do it with the Speidel lid as well. You can read that thread I linked to for suggestions.

Another suggestion: don't put the lid on until after the hot break has subsided. Usually you will see the hot break - thick, rising foam - in the first 10 minutes or so of the boil. Once the hot break is over, you can put the dome on and not worry about boil over.

I now use a hood as well and boil overs can be a problem, also all my hops get boiled out the sock and stick up the sides of the Braumeister (not the BM).
Next brew I have some defoamer to try, I was given this to try so I'm not sure of the maker, but 5 star do make one called Fermcap-s I believe. Google it.
I hope this will stop all the foaming issues while still allowing a very vigorous boil. Once I have tried it I'll post my observations here.

This of course has little to do with your burnt your fingers, and yes I have also done this. I'm hoping 'prevention is better than cure'

Well now I finely know what you mean by "hot break"

Sorry can't copy a picture so I'l tell you:

I skip the drilling and use a long pair of oven gloves that go past my elbow.

Works like a charm
