Heat Insulation Jacket for $13

Unread postby fy0d0r » Mon Feb 10, 2014 1:39 pm

Guys, I'd like to share a lifehack about the Heat Insulation Jacket for BMs:

One could save a fortune by getting the foil backed camping mat for $13
http://amzn.com/B00G238F74
And cut out the holes for handles/valve in 5 minutes instead of paying the $100+ for the original version.

The standard size mat available in Russia (for just $5 :-) ) fits perfectly well for 50L BM

Is this "foami" side heat resistant?

It definitely does not melt at 100C (can't boil water any hotter :) )

I had the same idea a few months ago. Today I've cut the camping mat to size and put it around the Braumeister.

As you can see it is a used camping mat. Since I had it laying around unused it didn't cost me a dime and it only took me 15 minutes or so to cut it.

I have a second mat somewhere in the attic. I might double the jacket, but I'm not sure if it will add a lot...

fy0d0r & niels - what kind of fasteners do you guys use to keep the jacket in place?

No fasteners for me, it holds well by the cuts around the handles

The seam is on the back so I taped it down for testing. If it seems to help during my next brew day I will add some velcro to it.

Whipped up this in the shed today

Left over roofing insulation from the shed called Air-Cell.
Ducting tape. Edges and to put two bits together
Tin foil on back with wallpaper adhesive.

All from left over stuff ;-)
