Mounting the controller remote from the BM?

Unread postby Cervantes » Sat Jul 12, 2014 10:21 am

Hi,

I was talking to a fellow BM owner today who was considering removing the BM control box from the underside of the BM and mounting it remotely by using longer cables.

To me it seems like a good idea.

One advantage is that it could just be unplugged for cleaning, so would lessen any chance of water damage.

The other advantage would be that you would be able to operate the controller without having to stoop. I personally use my BM sat on an old cooler about 600mm off of the floor as this makes it the ideal height for getting to the top to remove the malt pipe. However it does mean that I either have to sit or stoop whilst programming the controller.

Has anyone either done this or considered it?

Would the longer cables be readily available or would they have to be specially made?
Cheers

When I ordered my BM I bought it from Ross Kenrick at Craftbrewer in Brisbane and he was telling me that a guy he new made the control remote from the kettle.
I don't know any more details other than that.

I found that at my height 6'5" I had trouble reading the controller so I took it off and carefully bent the brackets that mount the control box to the kettle and now it is at an angle facing upwards I can read it a lot easier now.

Most of the wiring could be simply extended, but I would be careful with the one of the temp probe. I don't know what type of probe it is (analog or digital) and extending the wire could throw off the calibration.

That looks a lot more practical.

Do you unplug the controller when cleaning or leave it in place?

I disconnect all cables and just clean the Speidel. I have mounted the original sockets on a piece of wood on the rear leg.

Looks nice!. I also like that valve and fittings.
Is that a valve from the US?
The ones I've seen in Europe don't look quite so nice.

All the parts for the valve are bought from ebay. 1,5". Made in China. But they are well made.

I know that there are plenty of good quality products manufactured in China. Altough sometimes it's difficult to discern the good stuff from the crappy non 304/316 ss stuff.

I too am looking to move my controller from under the BM as mine is now to low when brewing to see properly.

Just wondering wether you used the same plugs and cables etc or obtained new ones. I know the connectors are made by Hirschmann, but as said in a previous post, what about the temp sensor? Anyone know what type this and its connector are?

Thanks for the part numbers but they are a different spec to mine! My controller is the earlier one. However I have found the original connectors here in the UK.
