New Brew Controller

Unread postby Fliegende Gans » Sat Nov 03, 2018 12:19 pm

Hi All

Haven't been on for a while, but been brewing away quietly.

I got fed up with having the old controller unable to import recipes etc. So built my own one using an arduino type processor with built in wifi and Brewmaniac software. The software is free and the author is very receptive to changes. I'm now able to import all my recipes for brewing and it will control the process with alarms as and when required for hop additions etc.

Works very well all in all very pleased for a cost of around £100 plus my time and effort.

Nice, does it work well with the BM hardware or did it require significant tweaking?

BTW There is actually already a way to push recipes in the beer.XML format to the BM, via MySpeidel and hopefully, with the incoming move to HTTPS, the ticket I have raised with the Brewfather brewing software has piqued the developer's interest enough to implement it in that too so that you actually do this within that being software too.

Any details on the hardware design? I’d like to know more.

Cracking build. I also like that you have extended the cabling. I investigated this type for of thing and was going to include chugger pump control.

If my controller ever goes pop, I will be back to this thread like a shot.

Do you have more details please?

Read the "readme" on the linked GitHub page. As well as beer.xml files it also allows you to push recipes from the Brewers Friend cloud database. This app and the more basic script by the same person has already been discussed before on this forum.

I would love more details...I'm looking for a suitable NON Speidel controller replacement, so I can have it ready for when my NOT FIT FOR PURPOSE MISTING controller goes pop.

Will post a full parts build over the next few days.

As an add I have a mk1 controller so wifi wasn't an option and this was acheaper way to go for me.

Also there is a bigger control box being built at the moment with other gadgets inside, to be revealed at a later date......if it doesn't blow up!!! :D :D :D

Integrates pretty well, but at the moment I have a temp sensor dangled over the edge, as the BM sensor fitted is incompatible with the software. But I have sourced a thermowell to replace the original temp sensor in the BM so temps will measure from underneath. Just not got round to doing this yet!

I get a feeling you could have a market for a few of these.

I refer to my BM as the Braumister

I'd prefer not to say what I refer to mine as.....I have no affection for it.... It's a Speidel product.

I've had a BM50 for 4 years now. In that time I've had the controller blow up and purchased another one which also misted up. The controller is badly designed and positioned and the tap is just awful. As a complete brewing unit it is absolutely wonderful. I love it.

I got a very old version of BM20 from a friend. The controller is very old and broken, so it is replaced. I would say that It's perfect for me.

The controller is just assembled, and it's running PID autotune right now with 23liter water.

It's interesting that I started developing the controller by using it on a Grainfather, and now I am going to use it to run a Braumeister.

I would like to share my experience if anyone is interested.

What I learned so far:
1. The side thermometer is close to the heating element. That makes it a bad choice for temperature probe.
The old temperature probe is broken, so I removed the rubbery stuff and reuse the thermowell for a DS18B20.
The reading from the controller was almost 10 degree lower than the reading from the side thermometer until I turned on the pump.
