INSTALLING NEW WELDLESS BOTTOM TAP VALVE

Unread postby rmklaw » Mon Mar 19, 2018 5:57 am

I would like to install a weldless fitting for a new tap on the bottom (like the Plus). How safe is it to drill with special bit the bottom of the BM20? I have done the drilling in other kettles and my conical, but I am not sure about the BM20. Thanks.

No need to drill. Check this mod out -

I'm about to do this with a t-piece and a mini ball valve. I only need it to drain the BM after cleaning. I pump through the main tap via a bac springer filter when brewing.

You could also try this is you fancy using the BM's pump to shift wort -

Thank you Mashy. I like the simple option, but was concerned about removing the pump and fittings and whether or not a T fitting would fit in size. Also, are the pump fittings BSPP or NPT?

Space it tight under there - you would have to remove the pump to drill & weld anyway IMO. All BSP from memory.
If you look and the link there is a full list of parts, sizes & suppliers.

I really really can't shout enough about how good it is to have the lower tap pumped but the T is a step in the right direction.

My though was to drill and install a weldless fitting and then connect the valve to it. I have done that in a SSBrewtech Kettle and on two conical fermenters. What I would like to find out is whether the bottom of the tank is a single layer steel. If it is, then it is easy to drill with a special drill bit I got from SSBrewtech that is made to the exact size of the fitting.

Hi Mashy. I ended up drilling a whole on the bottom outer edge close to the pump fitting and installed the tap. It was really easy and took less than 1/2 hour. Check the pictures in my last posting. Thanks for your help.

A low tap really helps, saves a lot of faffing about.

½ hour is a result 8) didn't know you had all the kit. Result. Nice pics, nice job.

Next you will want a pumped lower tap.

Actually, I have a rig that attaches to the tap with quick disconnects consisting of a Blichmann pump going to a Brewers Hardware trub filter, going to a Therminator chiller and out to either the conical fermenter or the whirlpool arm.
