need to replace mesh filter

Unread postby paulg » Tue Nov 01, 2016 9:06 pm

my mesh filters for the malt pipe are starting to be a bit ragged,so its time to replace them.
What is the best thing available now? originals from spiedel ,bac brewing or something else.

second question.
I have recently started brewing with pellet hops and have a hop spider from america (sorry cant remember the maker) my concern is that there doesnt seem to be much movement of the hops inside the spider during the boil.i am reluctant to let the pellets roam free as I run the pump during chilling and had the pumps clog with leaf hops when I did that before.
Can I let the pellets run free and then attempt to whirlpool before draining to the fermenter and get reasonably clear wort running off.I currently remove the hop spider and transfer to fermenter as soon as the temperature is down to 21c straight after removing the chiller.
I use whirlfloc tablets in all but my black beers

I also replaced the fine medh filter with the filter discs from Bac Brewing http://www.bacbrewing.com/epages/990497 ... B.BM20.001

The are easy to use and clean.

Does anyone have the link to the ones, with a proper sealed edge ?

I saw them ages ago, but cannot remember the link.

I also recommend the bac brewing discs. So much better than the original.

looking at bac brewing website there appears to be 2 sizes of mesh.i assume the most popular is the one with the larger holes ,as I have read the comments on another post about efficiency

The pump doesn't clog with pellet hops, I do it all the time.

I had the first version and the pump really struggled.
The later disks with a more open mesh are OK but IMO still don't recirculate as easily as the original Speidel ones though.

Cheers

I have been using the ones from Bac brewing for a while now and have had no issues what so ever.
I also use a silicone seal around the top filter.

I've just started using the Bac filter disks and I find them much better than the original Speidel woven mesh ones and they are also much easier to clean than the originals.

I've found them to have been a worthwhile ugrade for me and can recommend them.

Joe what is your procedure after cooling ,do you cool using pump then whirlpool and wait before running off?

I have been using hop basket then cooling with pump and running off almost straight away with no whirlpool as the trub settles quite quickly but
i can see having to wait for the pellets in the wort to settle if they are free
