Speidel-based seminar at Bierberaad / Amsterdam

Unread postby dinnerstick » Wed Feb 18, 2015 8:05 am

The Mediamatic group in Amsterdam started a new program last year, a beer education and tasting event called Bierberaad. The idea is that once every month or two they get 4-6 speakers from any corner of the beer community (experimental homebrewers, industry stalwarts, yeast experts, beer historians, judges and evaluators, representatives of the burgeoning micro scene, sales and marketing, and whatever else you can think of) as well as from cousins of the beer world (wine, fermented food, etc). Everyone gives a short (15-20 min) presentation, and accompanying those that concern beer, there are tasting samples passed around during the talk. It's a fun environment, part beer nerd, part friend-or-partner-of-beer-nerd, part people who are interested in what's going on around these sorts of exciting scenes but know little about craft beer. In addition there is a homemade dinner served before the talks start for an extra fee, in the previous location Mediamatic grew their own catfish and herbs in a dual-hydroponic system, as well as mushrooms and fermented veggies. I'm not sure about now as they recently moved. Entry to the talks alone, and the beer tastings that accompany, is 10-12 euro. The events are friday nights in Amsterdam, in the new location which is 15 minutes walk from the train station (centraal), Dijksgracht 6. The talks are all in English as the crowd is cosmopolitan.
I recently received news that there will be a talk centered around the braumeister at the 10 april event. It will be presented by some recluse bearded man called dinnerstick! I therefore encourage all locals to attend! The idea will be that I have designed a new beer around the capabilities of the BM, brewed it once, and will serve and discuss the result. The beer is a long mash (start in the morning, go to work, lauter in the evening, like an overnight mash but overday), sour wort (a few days with lactic acid bacteria in the BM), with ~50 non-barley in the grain bill, then dry hopped with something fruity. I will also introduce the BM system, so I'm looking for good pictures that demonstrate how it works. A google image search reveals a few good ones such as the one below, but if anyone has a better, more interesting, funny, less german, etc picture they want to suggest or contribute (as long as it demonstrates the functionality of the BM) please post it! Thanks and please let me know if you are coming.

Sounds fascinating and an enjoyable way to spend a Friday night in Amsterdam ! I wish I could be there, best of luck, hope it goes well.

Would it be possible to get a video or transcript or recording and post it up ?
To brew or not to brew, that would be a stupid question !

OK, I'll have to check my calendar and book a train and hotel for April 9.

Thanks all for the enthusiasm! Brautim, I have no idea, so far I don't think they have anyone videoing them but I don't see why not as they started out as a media organization! I'll ask.

SWMBO wouldn't be too pleased if I left her with kids, friends and family on the night of her birthday... So I'll have to give this one a pass.

Best of luck!

The beer is almost done! I tasted the first sample yesterday. It's a very mellow, drinkable base beer; tart but not shockingly sour (depending perhaps on your reference point...), very dry finish (1.046 -> 1.006). Medium straw color, slightly hazy, a hint of honey spice on the nose, I always seem to get this from the wild lacto fermentation. No head as it's not carbonated, but it should pour a fluffy white head. The first dry hop went in; it's a bit of amarillo and a lot of citra. I'm trying to build layers of tropical mango and grapefruit on top of the largely blank slate. We'll see how it comes out.... Second dry hop will probably be more of the same.
Very nice that a few of you are joining, looking forward to meeting you there!

Last Call!! The beer is now in the keg, just carbonating and clearing up a bit more. It's sour, it's fruity, what more could you want? The web page for the event is also updated, with information on the other talks:
http://www.mediamatic.net/384154/en/bee ... aumeisters
and there is an online survey for the presentation on beer and healthy lifestyle, with the results to be presented in that talk, so do fill that out, takes less than a minute.
The keener among you will notice that my real name seems rather non-dutch; fear not, all will be reconciled at the talk. But, like an even duller sequel to legally blond, I am legally dutch...

Those attending do make yourselves known so we can share a beer after!! See you there!
