Just wondering about an upgrade later in the year.

Since I've been using a prototype I suppose the software is not really representable for the production version. Based on my experience I would not upgrade to a new controller with this version of the software. If the software improves and really adds some useful features (e.g. better interface, recipe naming, more hop timers, network capabilities, ...) I would consider it if the price is right.

But as said: This is based on an incomplete software version. I hope someone with a new BM will give us a bit more info about the functionalities and usage of the controller.

I just noted on the Aus supplier Grain and Grape that since Xmas the price has increased by $100 au for each of the 20 and the 50.

Until I see evidence of an actual improvement I will be happy to use my outdated controller 8)

I'm with niels & dicko on this one.
I don't see any real benefit of the new controller compared to what I've already got. My controller is the second gen that beeps to tell you when to add the hops & it's more than suitable. The only two gripes I have with the BM is the boil, it's sufficient but weak. I'd like to boil a little harder so to compensate, I boil for 90mins for all my beers. I could buy or make a hood, we'll see. The second is the hop additions. Three hop additions that will beep when it's time to add but I would really like a couple more so I don't have to sit there & watch the timer. Five beep additions would be much better.
I'm not fussed on the new look either.

My controller is the older type, it does not have hop addition beeps but that does not matter to me....I can't hear any of the beeps anyway.

Does anyone with the new BM have a software version higher than v1.0.16 oct 30 2014?
I'm wondering when the new firmware will be available and how we are supposed to update it.

i have that same version, my guess is that there is wifi implemented in the unit, just hidden from the controller at this point (possibly to be displayed via a certain pattern of keystrokes).
As for when, we heard about 4 months from november so perhaps in march.

With 20 you can only make < 20 with 50, you can make 50 or < 25.

true-ish, but you can make 25L in the 20, i do it regularly. of course you face grain bill limitations.

With the bm20 you can also make 8 - 13 l with the short maltpipe.

This is why I used "<" It means 'less that the following number'.

My new toy arrived today a 2015 BM50 very happy with the build quality.

Not sure how they are going to implement the WiFi or the upgrades as I have done a scan for wireless devices with it turned on and cant see anything and had a bit play with the controller keys to find a hidden menu without any luck
