Jamil Zainasheff Q&A event in the Netherlands

Unread postby dinnerstick » Fri Feb 10, 2017 11:40 am

Hi All,
I am very excited to announce that homebrewing legend Jamil Zainasheff is making an appearance at my brewpub on 15 March 2017. For those who don't know him he was a super enthusiastic (Californian) homebrewer who TWICE won the American National Homebrewers Competition (from among literally 10's of thousands of entrants) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brewers_Association, and was subsequently one of the original 'brewcasters' on the Brewing Network (internet beer radio) where his shows The Jamil Show, Brew Strong, Can You Brew It, Brewing with Style are now classic educational pieces, all still available for free download, and just packed with brewing information, recipes, interviews, theory, etc. A few years back he started Heretic Brewing (Fairfield, California) where he now creates a diverse variety of brews, from super pungent triple IPAs to bretty table beers, and into the sour end of the spectrum as well. In the meantime he wrote the books "Brewing Classic Styles", an incredibly useful recipe handbook (with "How to Brew's" John Palmer), and "Yeast, the Practical Guide to Beer Fermentation" (with Chris White of White Labs), both excellent and accessible resources fort the beginner and advanced brewer alike.
On his visit, he wants to meet homebrewers, have a drink and a chat, and host an informal question and answer session/discussion. He told me he just loves chatting with homebrewers, and gets a kick out of signing his books, so bring them along if you have them. We're combining this meet & greet with a Heretic tap takeover, so we'll have at least 6 of his beers going. Further details of the evening to follow. Admission is free, no booking required, and drinking his awesome beers is entirely optional. Please join the evening if you are nearby, bring your toughest brewing questions and discussion points, come and meet the living homebrew legend that is Jamil!

What a very nice evening. Nice people, great beers. I loved the Heretic Agony Mango and Evil Red IPA.
Thanks Jamil and last not least Dinnerstick.

Yes, thanks very much to braumeisters Omphteliba (making the trip from Heidelberg!!) and OllieBBommel for coming! It was a fun event, we brewed a collab beer with Jamil during the day, and had the Q&A and lots of good chat at night. And the heretic beers were really excellent, all the hoppy ones were less than two weeks old in the keg and had been air-freighted over for the event!

Such a great event! It was totally worth coming from far: Dinnerstick and his crew are the nicest, the beers - his and Jamil's - were stellar! And meeting OlliBBommel in person was also a treat. And all the other nice guests I could chat with. And of course the "star guest" of the evening: Jamil! Cool dude, he rocked the Q&A: the whole house was hanging at his lips. So much brewing wisdom. And now i know what to do with my brett beer :)

Here is a shot video clip from Dinnersticks introduction:

I was pretty busy and by the tail end of it knackered and tipsy, so didn't take any pics towards the end of the evening, but here's what i've got; cracking the whip on our special guest during dough-in (we don't have a grist hydrator so it's old school dump the bag and stir), a requisite pose-in-front-of-brewhoue shot, and one of jamil doing his q&a thing. I'll post some more if they turn up, one of the bartenders was clicking away. Thanks to Omphteliba for posting lots of cool pics and panorama shots on that google link!

Great pics. Love the wood barrels in the pics too. Makes me want to add Utrecht as a stop off on one of my trips.

i recommend it! (i would though)
two of those (rioja) barrels are about to receive the beer we brewed with jamil, it's a low ABV belgian style pale, some of it is going in the wine barrels until it's just picked up enough of the barrel to make it interesting, and then blended back with the base beer.
