We are moving... Sort of.

Hi all,

I decided to move the forum to new forum software. I started the forum using the basic, no-frills and fast FluxBB software, but after a few weeks I noticed that it doesn't suit our forum after all. Therefore I will be moving the forum to phpBB as this is a very widely used and evolving platform. It will add some performance overhead, but in the long run it is a much better choice.

Because phpBB is a more advanced forum we will have the following new functionalities:
  • There is also an official Tapatalk plugin that will add the long promised Tapatalk support to Braumeisters.net!
  • Decent file uploads/attachments to posts.
  • Direct messaging between users.
  • The possibility to easily add functionality like "Thanks" button, etc...

Tests are done, colors have been changed and I'm almost ready to make the move. If all goes will I will be moving the forum on Monday March 24 around 10:00 CET. This means the forum will be locked (or even offline) during a few hours. After that I hope to welcome you all back.

There will be a few downsides to this migration:
  • All passwords need to be reset! Because the different way of storing passwords in the database everyone will have to reset his/her password when the new forum comes online.
  • All avatars will be lost! Because there is no decent data converter from FluxBB to phpBB the avatars will not be moved. You will have to upload your avatar again.
  • Some posts will be broken. I will try my best to fix these manually over the next days after the migration.

Looking back I should have started the forum with phpBB all along, but like with brewing you sometimes start with a different set-up to evolve to that über-installation! I hope everything will go smooth and you can forgive me any nuisance resulting from this move.

I will announce the final move date/time using an announcement on top of each page. This way you will not be surprised!

Niels

Hi Niels - I just want to say that I really appreciate all the time and trouble that you have taken to start this up and keep this going.

Thanks again and really look forward to the new BM "venue"!

I agree, I found this a very useful forum while trying to decide whether to buy my own BM or not, I hope you keep up the good work.

Better to make the move now since the forum is still pretty young, than mess around with it later. Less headaches for you Niels.
Cheers and good luck.

Good luck with the move Niels.
I am sure we will all be patient during the transition and I look forward to the new features.

On another note, will the new forum have a recipe database included???

Cheers

Good move Niels, phpBB seems like a solid platform.
I wasn't planning on going for a run today but those cops came from nowhere!

Indeed, now is the right moment. As I will have to fix some post manually I wouldn't want to do it when the post count is tenfold of the current.

Sorry Dicko... The recipe database will not be part of the new forum. The recipe database is still in the planning phase. I don't think it will be up and running before the end of the summer (winter for you down south).

This would be ideal, but worst case scenario you will have to use the "I forgot my password" functionality of the new forum. I'll let you know in the final announcement!

To new members,

In preparation to the move I disabled registrations on this forum. This makes it possible for me to export all user data and prepare a mailing that will be sent out after the move has been completed. Registrations will be enabled again when the new forum is launched. If all goes well you will be able to join us on Monday March 24 around 16:00 (4:00pm) CET.

If you want to get notified when new registrations are possible again you can drop me an e-mail ([email protected]" target="_blank) and I will let you know.

Thanks for understanding!

Niels

Hi,

Just one question.

Is there a "New Posts" link for the new look forum?

On the board index page there is a link for "View new posts". If you click it you'll get a list of all topics with new posts. There's a weird little icon to the left of the topic title that will bring you to the first new post of the topic.
