New toy

Any discussion about non-specific Braumeister brewing techniques can be discussed here. E.g. "How to make a starter?", "What's the best way to store my grains?", "Which pH meter do you recommend?", ...

New toy

Picked up this digital refractometer during my business trip to Japan a couple of weeks ago - used it for the first time yesterday, while brewing Imperial Pumpkin ale (SWMBO has an uncanny craving for it).

It calibrates with distilled water and measures wort in Plato.

Easier to use than the traditional refractometer and obviously more precise.

The reading shown is pre-boil after the first mash.

Not a necessity by any measure, but makes the brew day just a little easier

Very nice...are they expensive to buy?
The worst thing that can happen if I die is that my wife will sell all my brewing equipment for what I told her I paid for it

I just searched the Net and the price seems to be around $359 USD. There is a Brix (0-53 +/-0.05) version too.

Nice "toy"! This is some serious equipment! I'll put it on my to-ever-buy list ;)

Atago refractometers seem to be seriously overpriced in the US @ USD 350:

I paid about JPY 25,000 from Rakuten (Japanese Amazon equivalent) - about USD 250.
