Speidel 12L Fermenter

Unread postby Muddy » Sun Jul 12, 2015 3:45 pm

Does anyone know why Speidel do not fit the same top to the 12L fermenter as they use in all the other fermenters. I want a good fitting airlock, so would expect the 12L to come with the top that takes either the solid bung or airlock bung. I've read that people have had bad experiences when drilling the top, leading to a poor seal.

If Speidel now has a 10l Braumeister, and the 20L can be made to brew smaller batches, the 12L fermenter is ideal. I would love to be able to buy the Speidel fermenter, but will not do so until the top is consistent with the others.

Anyone else feel the same?

I don't know that I'll do 10l batches with my 20l BM, but that does seem pretty silly they wouldn't at least offer an upgraded lid with airlock.

Spoke with Greg at http://www.brewuk.co.uk who as ever was really helpful. The 12L fermenter does come with a cover that will take the airlock and bung.

Happy days...Looking to start a APA of my own design once the fermenter arrives

I just received a couple of these for fermentation experiments. I have to say, the lids are shite. The images on the internet give the impression that these lids are similar to the more adaptable ones that come with the 20 and 30L FVs. Had I known I wouldn't have bothered :(

I think 12 l would be to small for a 10 l batch, even with a yeast that has a moderate krausen.

Doing a 10 l batch with westmalle or a weizen yeast in a 12 l fermenter does not seem like a good idea!

My 10 l batches go in the 20 l fermenter.

You could use a blow-off tube and harvest some nice healthy yeast in the process 8)

Hi. New to the forum and this is my first post (I will say hello properly in another post). The 12l fermenter is a nice piece of kit and with 2 brews under my belt I found it to be an ideal partner for the 10l Braumeister. The lid is a bit of a pain but easy to drill out with a spade end drill bit so that it takes the Speidels fermentation lock and rubber bung (also a nice bit of kit).

Welcome RobC, congratulations on the BM!

The speidel FVs are great, but the 12L is a let down. I have four 30Ls. They're are fantastic, as far as FVs go. The 12L is let down, sadly, by the crap lid.

Don't worry about the interchangeability of the lids if it is an issue and just use "Glad Wrap" (cling film) as detailed in this link/thread http://aussiehomebrewer.com/topic/45706 ... s-airlock/
