Braumeister WiFi module

Unread postby niels » Sun May 03, 2015 6:08 pm

This is a new topic about the WiFi module as the "announcement" thread is becoming a bit too messy.

Last week I received the following information from Speidel:

Irina from Speidel wrote:Hi Niels,

As it has been announced already our new control unit for Braumeister is designed with the function for WLAN connection.

Regarding this we want to provide some information:
- A small piece of additional hardware is available in the 3rd quarter of 2015
- The housing’s surface of the module is aluminum anodised and could be easily clamp to the feet of the Braumeister
- The connection cable has to be screwed to the free connection on the control unit (similar to the temperature sensor)

The monitoring is possible through router or directly as hotspot on the smartphone.
At the moment there is no App available.

The module disposes as a flash adapter.
This allows to update the newest version which would be available online using PC (the cable therefore will be provided)

The price hasn’t been set so far.
But we assume that it is going to be about € 100,-- net

Herewith we have created the possibility for updates and other applications which lead to the edged product.

Cheers!

In short: It will be coming in 2015 Q3 and will cost around € 100,00 + VAT.

Speidel only mentions "monitoring" and not "programming", so we'll have to see how this will be in the final product.
The module will allow to upgrade the firmware of your Braumeister, but it is a bit unclear to me how it works. It looks like you'll have to connect the module to your PC using the provided cable. I hope this will be a standard USB cable and not a proprietary cable (e.g. serial).

I asked Irina/Ralf more information about the software. I want to know if it will be possible for third parties to develop an application that connects with the module. I really hope that Speidel will provide a public API as this way you'll be able to write your own monitoring (and programming) interface if you want.

I've also seen some pictures of the module, but I can't share this at the moment. Probably since it is not the final result yet. I will share any information as soon as I get it.

Awesome.. programming or control of the BM would be good.. possibly
For owners of the original BM - will it be possible to buy and install the new control unit as well as the wifi unit as a package?

Think I would wait for a while until all software issues were ironed out....

You could buy both at the same time to replace your old controller.

Nope, no details yet. But I'm promised to get more information in the near future.

It's officially announced by Speidel via their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/speidelsbraume ... 0278956133

Here is a copy of the post for convenience (fixed some typos):
Speidel Facebook Page wrote:Homebrewing 4.0 – BRAUMEISTERmobil
Already before industrie 4.0 there will be homebrewing 4.0 : )
The wifi modul allows to monitor the brewing process with and mobile device while you are in the garden or chilling on the sofa.
The monitoring is based on a website application. Some few actions beside the monitoring can be made like starting a recipe or interrupting the process.
The module is screwed on the second socket on the back of the control on all new controls of the Braumeister and clipsed to one feet outside the metal area.
With a PC and the newest on our website available software you flash these to the newest version. Also in the future you will be able to download the newest version on your Braumeister for free.
The wifi connection runs via a router and the control provides an IP-address.
Available in Q3-2015
Price about 100 €

To be clear: these are the "official" Speidel pictures, not mine.

And no, you can't rename recipes at the moment. I've suggested this feature to Speidel and I hope it will be part of a future firmware update.

hmm. I'd like an alternative mounting position just to be on the safe side when having a boil over. Will probably make an alternative clip so that the wlan module and antenna do not poke out and have the risk of being drowned by accident of boil over
Niels, maybe you can convince Speidel to create a more boilover proof mount?
