Very different measured efficiencies between batches

Unread postby steak » Sun Jan 08, 2017 10:12 pm

With quite similar grain bills, I get very different measured efficiencies in BeerSmith with my Braumeister 20L

It ranges from from 61% to 78%

I measure OG with a refractometer at the end of the chill when the wort is ready to be transferred to the fermenter, before pitching the yeast, of course

Any idea why I get so irregular efficiencies?

Thanks

Is it mash efficiency or some other type of efficiency you are talking about? What are you using to calculate the efficiency? In my opinion it's better to use a hydrometer at the end of the process.

What are the beer types and efficiencies?

i never really trust my refractometer. i can get rather different readings from the same sample of wort... so indeed i would confirm with a hydrometer.
other than that, are you doing anything different in the mash? longer rest times for example always give me higher extraction, correct mash pH also.
