Hoppy APA Brewed today

Unread post by Rhodesy »

After taking delivery of a BM20 this week I thought it would be rude not to. First impressions are as I hoped and I love it. Hit both my preboil & post boil targets. I did in my haste forget to take pics of cooling and the hop rocket (0 min steep additions).

I used the no sparge method which I enjoyed and managed to hit my target bang on, not bad for a first go. Cleaning was nice, quick and simple. Delighted with this system and plan to have another brew day tomorrow to get the festive stocks as they should be.

I ended up with just around 21L from the BM and added a 1L starter at high Krausen. It was bubbling away furiously when I checked it early Saturday morning. I may try hop bags and then strain them in a hope forward brew like this next time to see the volume difference and also how much easier cleaning is :D

Jeepers. Yes indeed. What hop flavour are you expecting?

I am not the best at taste reviews but tropical and punchy. Eldorado is a fantastic hop and produced a really fruity brrw on a Smash I done earlier this year. The Ahtanum will give some citrus notes, Wai-Iti I have not used before.

Keeping this for Christmas Day may prove a problem though.

It will be interesting to see if you get any green or veggy type tastes coming through. Tasted a beer recently and this was a feature - a few years ago I am sure it would have been considered a flaw.

Not expecting any but who knows. Will dry hop for a maximum of 5 days then keg,
Force carb and keep in the keezer until Christmas day.

Working from home today and had a check on this. It is now at FG only 3 days later. I find that WLP090 improves each generation (this being the 3rd). I did ferment at 21c which is 1C over the recommended tolerance of 18-20 but not too concerned. I find it reacts better at the upper range as opposed to fermenting low (unlike WLP001, US05 etc where they work well at lower temps too).

Going to give this another week at least in the FV anyway as I have my BM brew number 2 in there also which is a Mosaic IPA. Once are both fully fermented to and had a few days for the yeast to clean up I will then dry hop, crash cool and keg.
