Protein Rest : When to use it?

G'day All, Wanted some feedback on when I should / shouldn't be making a rest at 55 degrees for 15-20 mins for styles of beers. From what I have read it should be done for lagers/pilsners, beers with large percentages (more than 25%) of unmalted adjuncts or under-modified malt but I've been doing th...

Re: Priming Sugar before bottling

Back to the OP's original post, does anyone else bulk prime to carbonate their bottles? I've been using the brewers friend calculator : https://www.brewersfriend.com/beer-priming-calculator to adjust the amount of Dextrose to match the carbonation of the style. I'm usually adding the sugar to a boil...

Sparging - To agitate the spent grains or not?

G'day All, Ever in the search for improved efficiency, I wanted to know if going to the trouble of agitating the spent grains in the malt pipe prior and during the sparge to get more out fermentables out of the batch? I use a kettle (has a 80 degree function) for my sparge & do about 4*1.7L goes wit...

BM+ - Limited Trub - Using Lower Tap to Fill Fermenter

G'day All, I've been using a hop spider for the past several batches and noticed that the waste on the bottom of the device after the boil has been very limited. There's a few grain particles, but not a lot else other than some wort which I'm guessing would probably turn into lovely beer. The BM 20+...

Re: New Product : Low Oxygen Brewing Kit

It might actually be that Speidel is trying to offer their own to that from BacBrewing :
https://www.bacbrewing.com/en/parts-for ... 09-mm.html
Has anyone used one of these, it's about half the price of Speidel's.

Re: New "hold down bow" design

I bought my back in January and it's setup with the new design just like in your pics.
No complaints, It feels like a solid hold but haven't compared to the other model. Hadn't thought of using it a malt paddle until now!

Thermo Sleve - Is it worth it?

G'day All, During yesterday's sweltering conditions (~34 degrees), I happened to notice that my brewday finished up about 30 minutes earlier than usual with the temperature rising much faster than usual. Since this weather is fairly usual, I'd be curious to know what sort of impact the Thermo Sleve ...

Re: Cooling with the BM 20L PLUS

I have a 20L Plus model and very happy with the chilling capability. On my last batch (22L), I chilled down from 100 to 21 degrees in 20 minutes, stirring every minute to keep the whirlpool going & aerate the wort. I deactivate the pump at 25 degrees and don't stir for the last couple of minutes to ...

Re: Braumeister 20 limitations??

I've recently done my biggest (non-double) batch, a Triple as follows : 6.00 Kg malt (Pils,Viennia,CaraHell,CaraPils), 1.2mm crush + 0.850g Belgian Candi Sugar => 105min boil to get 21.5L @ 1083. Efficiency was about 79%. Following this, I'm keen to try 6.50 Kg of malt to gauge if the efficiency dro...

Re: Double Mash for Gravity - Double IPA Profile

<sidenote> Looking at style guidelines, I don't think this would qualify as a Double IPA given the immense OG, defiantly fits better into the American Barleywine (22C) category..! Here are the ingredients / recipe particulars if anyone was keen to know : 8.00kg Pale 1.25kg Munich 1.00kg Wheat 0.50kg...

Re: Double Mash for Gravity - Double IPA Profile

Here's what I ended up doing over the weekend (Double IPA). 1) Started with 23L of water and commenced first 5.5kg mash. Steps at [email protected], [email protected], [email protected] & [email protected]. 2) Turned off Braumeister, removed malt pipe and sparged with 5L of 78 degree water. 3) Attached water hose and chilled to 50 degrees + cleane...

Re: Double Mash for Gravity - Double IPA Profile

Thank you for the advice. I'm going to simplify it by removing some steps & also lower the temperatures to keep the taste drier. I'll give an update once this gets brewed later in the month. You're right about the Munich - I've made a regular IPA with 15% Munich a little while ago and it has turned ...
