Re: Protein Rest : When to use it?

Not disagreeing with you, just interested, what do you think is gained by doing a short protein rest if you start at 55C in a german lager? As in what would the final product have (or not have) over one that starts at saccarification temps?

Re: Protein Rest : When to use it?

I recently listened to Jamil Z on the Brew Strong podcast state that if you sit at the 50-60C protease temperatures for too long (and he stated ANY time with 100% modern well modified malts is too long) you will degrade the proteins too much and lose head retention proteins and other useful things t...

I just logged in via Tapatalk and it’s working fine now. Not sure why it didn’t work last week! Oh well [emoji1]

Is this forum software known to now work with the Tapatalk app now? I can't seem to login there just get a long winded error message. But logging on a computer via web browser is all OK.

Re: Malt conditioning and mill gap reduction

Interesting as my mill gap was 1.5mm and I was getting too much grain husks and endosperm passing up through both top and bottom filters and ending up in the boil. Mash efficiency was very high at 80-85% so I increased my mill gap to 2.0mm and found more in tact whole husks in my milled grain, a few...

How does that reduce trub/hot breakthrough? In my mind it would definitely increase the amount carried forward into the fermenter.

Re: Pickup tube for outlet valve

Ran a batch the other week and this worked perfectly, very minimal trub into the cube and a nice cone of hops and trub/break left behind. I did put a small piece of cardboard under the front two kegs so the cone tended more to the back side of the Brau which appeared to work well. https://uploads.ta...

Re: recommended method for pellet hops

I find pellet hops help bind and form the post-whirlpool cone for clear wort drain off!

Re: Pickup tube for outlet valve

Yes about 1 metre silicone hose down into a HDPE cube as I “no chill” my wort.

Re: Pickup tube for outlet valve

Finally got the tube back with the grooves cut. It works perfectly with a 20mm OD x 1.5mm CS silicone oring. There is enough play in it to push into the hole further to move pickup away from the tribe come which also slight raises the height of the pickup by a few mm, if you want to have the pickup ...

Re: Pickup tube for outlet valve

I’m waiting on one of the fitters from work to cut two 0.5mm grooves into that elbow on his lathe. I couldn’t do it myself with hand tools but if that o-rings hold the elbow tube is actually the perfect dimension without modification to the length on either side. Will report back once it is done. Se...
