Re: Hopstand

I usually do 20 mins, starting at 95C, finishing around 85-82C. Extract from an article from Scott Janish wrote on BYI magazine. Late whirlpool hopping is important for achieving hop saturated flavor because the fruity hop compounds are lost in the boil due to evaporation and trub. One paper found t...

Re: Thinking about getting a 50l BM

My view: 1 – Short: the extra money needed for a PLUS model is not worth it. Longer version: As FYI, I do own hybrid model (Speidel sent me a new BM due to manufacturing issue on the first no-PLUS one I received), it is a non-PLUS BM but it has the lower extra tap. I do not know why I got it that wa...

Re: Fermentor Air lock

Hopefully it will be ok, everything was sanitized going into the fermenter and hasnt been touched since it was placed down in the keller It should be fine, the first few days (2-4 days depending of temperature/yeast), as the active fermentation is happening and the fermenter keeps venting gas. Ther...

Re: Wort escaping under the pipe

I thought about this after Our last emails, but didn't post it. Could you test the uneven bottom, by corking the pump port(s), clamping the malt tube down as normal and filling the tube with water. Required touque, Extra support and seal adjustments would be easily visible and testable. Without gra...

Re: Fermentor Air lock

I am a bit confused. The bubbles in the airlock are produced by the CO2 escaping through the liquid in the airlock. You should add sanitizer or distilled water or vodka. If the airlock is empty, you expose the beer and infection is one step away. But before rushing to the fermentor to fill some wat...

Re: Rubber strip

Even when I use the BAC full cover filter plates I still use the original upper filter plate inside. That is something I start doing as well. I wonder what is the portion of BAC disk users using solely the BAC disk vs. using the BAC disk with the original BM upper filter plate inside (with plate tu...

Re: Wort escaping under the pipe

I brewed again last week and somehow fixed my wort escape issue (without even using the wooden blocks I created to support the BM bottom and make it flatter). …but I’m not sure exactly which one of the remedies I implemented worked (or a mix of a few) and my efficiently hugely suffered, from my norm...

Rollsockel für BM50 / Roller plate for BM50

New BM50 accessory product from Spiedel announced on their Facebook page. See: https://www.facebook.com/pg/speidelsbraumeister/posts/?ref=page_internal Actually well thought, seems good quality heavy duty plastic… but at 140 EUR (without VAT!), not in my budget. That got me thinking a small DYI proj...

Re: Wort escaping under the pipe

My thinking is the finer grain crush and the bac disk is just tooo much for the seal, it was originally "in tolerance" ie nothing has changed in the ss kettle it's always been like that? Nothing really changed in my brewing but thinking now about it, I also admit that the wort escape might have bee...

Re: Wort escaping under the pipe

End of mashing/brewing done, results: - mill a bit coarser -> no change, did this time 1.2mm with conditioned malt (higher moisture content), will push it to 1.4mm with conditioned malt next time to see if any difference - use the standard BM holding tube to fix my BAC disk -> a bit better but then ...

Re: Wort escaping under the pipe

I got the last info from Speidel, a thicker seal used to exist in the past, but it was only for the BM20, not for the BM50. Anyway, it does not exist for the BM20 anymore. In short no easy real solution for me. I did removed and reassembled the pump fittings but it did not help and I did not notice ...

Re: Wort escaping under the pipe

I can clearly see,in the second to last, photo two dents in the bottom of the kettle and a strange dark patch in between the two return outlets. Good eyes, but those dents are nothing to worry about. The one in red is a tiny dent and at the opposite side of the main wort escape zone, the blue are the...

Re: Wort escaping under the pipe

I'm digging up this post as I started to face some wort escaping under the pipe, without any reason that I can identify  . My issue is a bit different than in this early thread as my problem appeared overtime, not from the start (due to delivery damage or other). Some background, I purchased a ...

Re: BM50 Wort Pump Device – first experience

Was it yourself who tried teeing off the pump - how does it compare? Sorry for my uncertain English, but what do you mean by that? I have thought of replacing the BM pump with a switchable pressure pump. Low speed to mash. Then high speed to CIP & whirpool . But am I going too far ? I do not see a ...
